Letter from the Editor

Happy July to Everyone!

Golden State competitors were very successful at the AQHA Show in Guthrie, Oklahoma. Pictures and details in this newsletter.

Bev Sparrowk is a Golden State member and friend to all. Apparently, she can do anything! One of her poems is in this issue for your enjoyment.

Lots of opportunities to show in July. Details follow, get your entries in early!

It’s not too early to start planning to attend the Western State Finals in October. It’s now one show, not two; the schedule has been changed, and as always, the awards are over the top. To top it off, saddles will be given in every division! Criteria for saddle in this issue.

One of this editor’s bucket list items is to someday be as cool as Renee Jackson (see photo below!)

Have a fun and successful Summer!

AQHA World Show

Golden State Competitors Represented Us Well

Three days there, three days back. Non-stop action while there. The AQHA VRH World Show is a pageant unto itself. The Lazy E venue, with rolling green meadows, many trees, its own lake, white fences, is a delight for the eyes. Our very successful Golden State competitors were joined by “cheerleaders” which combined for a whole lot of fun for everyone. The following pictures tell the tale. Enjoy.

Welcome to the Lazy E, Guthrie, Oklahoma.

The most amazing trail course. The start was on the far right, riders rode through the stream, through the cattle pen (with cattle), to open a gate to the big field. Natural trot & lope logs, a trail winding through the trees, etc. made for a challenging and fun course.

From “The Cantina” restaurant & bar overlooking Conformation in the air-conditioned Lazy E arena. The “Cantina” makes watching Conformation pretty palatable!

Christian Scanlan 7th in the AQHA Youth All Around and Reserve Champion in the NRSHA.

Stephanie Lewis 6th in the AQHA Limited Amateur All-Around.

Candice Terry, 9th in the NRSHA Novice Amateur All-Around.

Jennifer Ray, 3rd in the AQHA Senior All-Around.

Sarah Clifford, 9th in the AQHA Senior All-Around.

Golden State trainers were stellar in the Cow Work. Jennifer Ray & MC Metallic Lightning 4th, Sarah Clifford & Jewel’s Smart Remedy were 5th!

Jody Smith & Zander showed ‘em how to ‘git er done’ winning Reserve Champion in the HUGE Limited Amateur class. Over 90 capable competitors. (Ranch Riding and Trail had over 100.)

The ribbon is half as big as Jody, but not near as big as her grit!

Christian Scanlan & Louis Vuitton Please win the Youth AQHA Trail.

Lena Coulson knows how to deal with the heat.

Josie Driscoll (far top left), Kim Donlon (far top right), Anne Reid (front left), Dawn Poston (front center) came to be cheerleaders for all the Golden State riders. Samantha Scanlan (Christian’s mom-center back) performed her duties as show mom. Sarah showed two horses, coached, and sometimes drove the indispensable golf cart

Heather Bryant & Stylish In My Boots.

Debby Sanguinetti & Chelano watch from the best seat in the house.

Western States sponsored the Limited Youth Cutting, as a sponsor had preferred stabling, and advertised our upcoming fun. (Thanks to Meghan Carr for the posters).

Dinner at “Gages”, the old train station in Guthrie. Kim Donlon, Anne Reid, Dawn Poston, Sarah Westfall, Christian Scanlan, Josie Driscoll, Samantha Scanlan, Sarah Clifford.

Woman of Many Talents

A number of years ago Bev put together a small booklet of her poetry as a Christmas present for her family members. This Editor is honored that she recently shared it with me. Entitled “From Under My Hat, A Collection of Cowgirl Poetry” there are 15 poems covering aspects of western/ranch life. I chose the following to share with you.

“The Trio”

They winter in California
Summer in the Oregon hills
They’ve made themselves a legend-
Concho, Whitey and Will

Concho’s got a missing toe
Got stomped on by a cow
Whitey’s shoulder shows the scar
Of a gore that’s healed up now

Will, he’s got a lip that curls
So he greets you with a grin
That exposes several gaping holes
Where you know his teeth have been

Whitey, he’s the tracker
Concho’s old and wise
Will is tough and wily
You can see it in his eyes

They always get to work on time
They’ve never had a raise
They never groan or cuss or whine
They work for pride and praise

They do the work of ten good men
Flushing cattle from the trees
They’ll hold ‘em up or run ‘em down
Or bring them to their knees

These dogs are worth their weight in gold
‘Though their reward all are small
To work with them’s a privilege
And a lesson for us all

Is there anything this woman can’t do?

WSVRHA Year End Awards

Saddles in Every Division

You read that right, there will be saddles given in every division! The criteria are pretty simple:

“In order to qualify for a saddle, a horse rider combination must attend three shows at the affiliate level. Those shows can be across a combination of affiliates. That rider need not attend the finals in Las Vegas. The saddle will be awarded to the horse-rider combination with the “best five” shows.”

(Golden State is an affiliate organization within the Western States VRHA.) There are three remaining 2023 shows in Golden State (go to gsvrha.org for calendar & details) and several in Arizona and Nevada (go to wsvrha.org for info). There’s still plenty of time to qualify!

Points for the first Golden State shows of the 2023 season are up on wsvrha.org. Check it out. Don’t forget that at each remaining Golden State show there will be a random drawing for incentive awards to be used at the Western States Championships.

Every Golden State Show will have a random drawing for an “incentive” award to be used at the Western States Championships.

Quote of the Month

Craig Cameron (b 1949) is an American horse trainer. He won the Road to the Horse colt-starting contest in 2010 and has been inducted into the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame.

Samantha Scanlan has been saying this for years, so we’ll attribute it to her.
